LLM CAD: International Space Station in progress

I have been exploring using on-device LLMs to model 3D objects with reference material. To my surprise, the ISS has been rather conducive to the project.

The reference material used here was 39 PDFs from NASA, ESA, JAXA and vendors. At times the AI-powered tool did have to take guesses on dimensions. Those guesses are flagged, and future work will investigate how to validate them and blend the photogrammetry and tech specs more seamlessly with confidence intervals.

Most of my time has gone into the LLM CAD side: getting a model to read reference documents, keep track of where each number came from, and say so when it’s guessing. With that in place, the ISS itself came together in one evening.

The model below is the facets OpenSCAD produced from the code the LLM tooling wrote. Drag it to turn it, edit the LLM-produced source, and press render to rebuild the station in your browser. The model viewer is a WebAssembly build of my OpenSCAD fork. I still plan on doing a write-up on that project, so check back soon.
